Our Heritage

More than a century of sport in the Helderberg

Founded in 1908 as the Paarde Vlei Golf Club, our club has grown alongside Somerset West itself. In 1956 the addition of tennis courts saw it become the Somerset West Country Club, with bowling greens and further facilities following soon after.

Today the club provides a unifying home for sporting and social life in the Helderberg basin. Our clubhouse — first opened in 1950 and extensively modernised in recent years — offers a welcoming bar, dining and function venues with sweeping views of the Hottentots Holland mountains.

Whether you are a seasoned competitor or simply looking for an active, friendly community, you will find a warm welcome here.

Something for everyone

Four thriving sporting codes share our grounds, each with its own proud history, active leagues and social calendar.

Golf

A course of two halves: a classic parkland front nine around the clubhouse, and a striking links-style back nine framed by man-made dunes — ten new holes designed by Peter Matkovich and opened in 2018. A round here is unlike any other in the Cape.

Bowls

Founded in 1936 and part of the country club family since 1961, our bowls section combines competitive league play with a famously sociable atmosphere. Immaculate greens, friendly coaching and open days make it easy to get started.

Established in 1897, we are the oldest tennis club in the Boland — voted the No. 1 tennis club in Sub-Saharan Africa. Six beautifully maintained courts, coaching programmes, and social tennis every Wednesday and Saturday. All ages and levels welcome.
